My AW 2011 senior collection was inspired by Norwegian folk costumes, Victorian nostalgia, and ponderings on culture and identity. I concieved, designed, patterned, and constructed the 10-piece collection during a 8-month period, and the completed collection participed in multiple fashion shows in Chicago in the spring of 2011.

knitwear http://www.birgittenorsen.com/knitwear/ Fri, 14 Oct 2011 11:14:44 +0000 http://www.birgittenorsen.com/?p=144 I have vivid memories of learning to knit from my mother, grandmother and nanny, and this link to the past has been a passion for years now. This culminated in the pieces influenced by handcraft traditions I designed, patterned and created for my F/W-2011 collection “Traces of Thread”. I work predominantly with handknitting, enjoying traditional stranded colorwork, lace, and cable knitting. Machine knitting is something I’ve also tried, enjoyed, and understood.

From 2010 I’ve designed and released handknitting patterns on Ravelry under the name indigorchid design.

custom-made http://www.birgittenorsen.com/custom-made/ Fri, 14 Oct 2011 10:06:17 +0000 http://www.birgittenorsen.com/?p=349 I take on a range of custom projects, from re-fashioning and re-purposing, to sewn-from-skratch garments made to measure. I’ve worked with brides, choirs and people who just want better fitting clothes. My method is collabarative, flexible in terms of budget and scope, but always with the aim of well-fitting, well-made, and well-loved end results!

costumes http://www.birgittenorsen.com/costumes/ Sat, 25 Jun 2011 22:16:21 +0000 http://www.birgittenorsen.com/?p=13 Theater runs in the family for me, and I’ve grown up with rehersals and black boxes and prop tables. It is no surprise I’ve ended up with costume-making then! I cover the process spanning from design and renderings, through draping, patternmaking and fitting, to fulfillment in construction and distressing.

design studio http://www.birgittenorsen.com/design-studio/ Wed, 25 May 2011 19:58:08 +0000 http://www.birgittenorsen.com/?p=1 Design projects come in many forms. I enjoy the research process, and keep a design journal that sometimes relates to a specific project, and sometimes is just creative exercising.  Here are some examples of that process, through research, fabric and pattern experimentation, to draping and construction. Visual design and drawing also have a place here.
